Barbara’s 3-Grain Medley

Enjoy some warmth with your next meal, courtesy of this favorite of the Molly Bea’s INGREDIENTS team: Barbara’s 3-Grain Medley side dish.  As usual, our item numbers are listed below for ingredients, should you need to pick up any last-minute additions.

Preparation:  10 minutes
Cooking time:  4-6 hours
Yield:  8 servings

INGREDIENTS:
1 Tbs  chives – SM-129
3 tsp chicken base  mixed with 3 cups water  – SP-02
2/3 cup uncooked soft wheat berries – GR-19
1/2 cup pearl barley – GR-37
1/2 cup – wild rice – GR-09
1/2 stick butter  – OR – 1/4 cup canola oil
1/4 cup  dried parsley  flakes  – SM-83
1/8 cup lemon peel granules – SM-64
1/2 teaspoon coarse sea salt – SM-03
Dash fresh ground black peppercorns – SM-85
OPTIONAL: 1/2 cup dried fruit:   dates, peaches, cranberries, figs, cherries or blueberries

DIRECTIONS:
1.  Combine the  chives, broth, garlic, wheat berries, wild rice & butter in a 3-4 quart slow cooker /crock pot.
2.  Cover & cook at low setting until liquid is absorbed & grains are tender.  This will take 4-6 hours.
3.  Stir in parsley flakes, lemon peel granules, sea salt & pepper to taste.
4.  Serve warm.

Oatmeal-Carrot Fruit Muffins

Here at Molly Bea’s INGREDIENTS, we prepare our homes for the cold midwest winter in a few ways.  The blankets and sweaters come out of storage, we make sure that the fireplace is ready to use and of course, we bake muffins for those days when a warm treat is necessary!
